There’s a pattern I see repeatedly in brilliant people.

Not a lack of ability. Not a lack of ideas. In fact—quite the opposite.

It’s what happens after the idea.

That moment between insight and execution is where many high performers quietly derail themselves — not dramatically, but consistently enough to matter.

In neuroscience, there’s a clear distinction between cognitive capacity (what you know) and behavioural output (what you do).

These rely on different systems.

Idea generation sits in networks largely involving the prefrontal cortex. Execution, however, depends on motivation, reward, and emotional regulation—particularly dopaminergic pathways (Miller & Cohen, 2001; Schultz, 2016).

Here’s the catch: The brain doesn’t reward ideas. It rewards progress.

And when progress feels uncertain or risky, the brain nudges you toward safer territory: refining, researching, rethinking (Kahneman, 2011).

High performers often fall into what I call the Polished Trap which can sound like laziness, or procrastination:

  • “I just need to refine this a bit more.”
  • “I’ll start once it’s clearer.”
  • “Let me gather more data first.”

All reasonable—and sometimes, a form of avoidance.

Because uncertainty triggers threat responses. And the brain prefers the safety of thinking over the exposure of doing—closely linked to avoidance motivation and cognitive control dynamics (Botvinick & Braver, 2015).

You’re not lazy. You’re not procrastinating. You’re optimising for psychological safety.

What can we do? Well, the most effective leaders don’t eliminate this, they reframe it.

Discomfort becomes a signal of relevance, not a warning sign.

Instead of asking: “Is this ready?”

They ask: “Is this meaningful enough to move?”

This aligns with research on approach-oriented goal framing and intrinsic motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000).

For instance, give the 48-hour output rule a try. When an idea really matters, create some form of output within 48 hours. It doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact just get it done because it’s movement.

You could share a rough draft or sketch a prototype or start a key conversation.

This works because it reduces perfection-driven inhibition, it creates rewarding feedback loops (dopamine reinforcement learning) and most importantly it builds behavioural momentum (Amabile & Kramer, 2011)

Brilliance is rarely the bottleneck.

Execution is.

And execution isn’t just discipline—it’s how your brain interprets risk, uncertainty, and reward.

When you understand that, you stop fighting yourself and start designing around yourself. And that feels sooooo much better.

Where do you notice yourself staying in “thinking mode” longer than necessary?

That’s often where the real shift begins.
